Fly by night

LI: To write a narrative from the point of view of a baby owl on its first flight

Mrs Anderson read us the book ‘First Flight’ by June Crebbin. We talked about the narrators point of view and used a Gemini Gem to prompt us to think more deeply about what the story might look like when told in the first person. I enjoyed using the Gem because it helped me with hint. This was the story that we wote about.

The sun sets as the moon arises. I say to myself (I am so happy for my first time to fly) looking at my surroundings other owls call out my name to go fly with them. As I look down at the dark shadows below me I hear some squirrels down at the atmosphere. The little owlette’s eyes wide with curiosity, decided it wants to fly. The harsh wind blew, crisp and frosty, as the sun began to set, my talons grip loosened, the branch suddenly feeling slippery, my heart stopped for a little bit as my grip fades away. As I will be jumping off and soaring through the air tonight. My feathers seem to curl up, keeping me warm from the chilly breezes. My heart started thumping quickly, as I glanced at the dark forest below, a gust of wind blew over me smelling like dead trees through the wind.

I can’t bring myself to jump, the nerves take over my body. I’m petrified , unable to move, feeling a tingly sensation overcome my body. The height makes my stomach drop.

Trying to fly is really terrifying, especially when looking down, just pitch black with trees coming out of the darkness. It’s a bit hard to tell how far the ground is because of how high I am, that’s also why it’s scary. So I decided to practice flying by standing on my nest and extending my astounding wings as I attempted a jump that was from my nest, to a long piece of wood. As I kept practicing and practicing, over and over again I gathered up the courage to jump from my nest to the ground

I muster up all the courage I can, looking at the ground that threatens to claim me. With one final sharp breath I jump, a whoosh of air following me as I spread my majestic wings, flapping them marvelously, as I fly over the long blades of grass, and all of the bodies of water spread across the broad forest.

Place Value

LI: How to identify place value up to the billions and three decimal places

For maths group one’s task was to learn how to solve place value problems and how we use place value in different area’s.  Place value is the place of a digit in a number that tells us how much it is worth. The number system is based on groups of ten, which means each place in a number is ten times bigger than the one to its right. Place value also has decimals, which help us show numbers that are smaller than one whole. The decimal point separates the whole number part from the smaller parts. To the right of the decimal point, each place value becomes ten times smaller than the one before it.

Prime and Composite Numbers

This week me and Group 1 in maths did prime and composite numbers, we had 23 questions about prime and composite, then when we were done we made a DlO about our work and this is the prompt that we used,

A prime number is a whole number which is only divisible by itself and one. A prime number only has 2 factors and if an number does have more than two, it is a composite number. For example : 5 is an prime number because 1×5 = 5 and there are no other factors. The first and only even prime number is “2”. other factors except 1 and 5.

How to round numbers incluing decimals

This week, me and my group learnt how to round numbers and the decimals otherwise known as tenths, hundreths, and thousandths. People use rounding to make guesses about numbers and to make maths problems easier to solve. Rounding numbers in maths helps you estimate numbers and it makes calculations quicker and simpler. Rounding numbers, in maths is really helpful.

Short Divison

For this task group 2 made a DLO of how to do short divison. We gave the information of how to do short divison . This was the information that we gave.

Write the number you are diving under a line and put the divisor on the outside. Start with the first number of the dividend. See how many times the divisor fits into it , and write the amount of times above the line . if there’s an remainder carry it over to the nex number of the dividend and keep going until you’ve gone through all the numbers. If there are anything left that can’t be divided that is the remainder or if your doing decimals

Multiplication DLO (group 2)

For this task group 2 made a DLO of how to do multiplication. We gave the information of how to do multiplication. This was the information that we gave.

Put the equation in the right formation. (To the right)
Times the 9 to all top number
Add the answers of the times to the bottom.
Add a placeholder when multiplying the 2 due to it being the second number.
Multiply all top numbers and add answers to the bottom.
Add both of the answers and there’s your answer!

Add leftovers to the next top number. Times it normally then add the leftover number. Repeat with any leftovers. (If no more numbers are to the side js add it to the answers.)

Cross out anything that is used or useless.

group 2 Addition Algorithm

For this task group 2 made a DLO of how to do addition algorithm. We gave the information of how to do addition algorithm. This was the information that we gave.

Stack the numbers with the digits aligned by place value then start from the right and add the numbers up if over 10 keep the 1 digits and move the tens then add it up and if still over ten then carry it over again and continue to the hundreds and any other place values adding the carried number then adding all them up and the total answer.Stack the numbers with the digits aligned by place value then start from the right and add the numbers up if over 10 keep the 1 digits and move the tens then add it up and if still over ten then carry it over again and continue to the hundreds and any other place values adding the carried number then adding all them up and the total answer.

What was life in the Annex

For this task I wrote what was life in the Annex. We are reading the book ‘Diary of Anne Frank’. Mrs Anderson created a Gemini Gem to help us with our story. The Gemini Gem helped us to give us hints to put in our story. And we wrote a diary if we were in the Annex.

Way back in 1942 me and my family had to be in an Annex behind a
book shelf in disguise.

The annex was quite cramped. Every 15 mins I would hear the town clock make a loud tick noise. Since they were really creaky and unstable wooden floor boards it was hard to go to the bathroom and walk because we didn’t want to be discovered by the Germans (Nazis).

Our secret needed to stay hidden. My diary has been the only entertainment since the Germans took over. Outside I could hear soldiers marching around the block. My heart was beating so hard because I was terrified to not get caught. I was tense of being loud, I was covering my mouth and tears were coming out of my eyes one by one. She was told in her head to go away. It was like a prison in the Annex because if I stood up on the floor boards it would creak so loud that I would get caught. There were Jewish people getting persecuted from the Germans.

Inside the Annex was very dark inside and outside. In the Annex it was not suitable for sleeping and there were rats coming in and out eating my family’s rations. Standing in the Annex smelled like sweat because we couldn’t shower and it smelled like moldy air. The Jewish people had a curfew to be at home from 8:00 pm or the Germans (Nazis) would persecute them.
